Past ICM President

After obtaining a good honours degree at Cambridge, Professor Derek Gladwell obtained wide industrial experience in the hospitality industry, working at both operational and management levels. His experience included serving as General Manager of one of Europe’s most famous 5 star hotels. A highly respected academic he was also a director of two hotel schools.

As a published author, he produced four books and a large number of articles on technical and management subjects. He was a former President of the HCIMA, a position he held for many years. As an international consultant, he also carried out numerous commissions for international development agencies and during his lifetime worked in 17 countries throughout the world. He was awarded his OBE for his services to education. He died in August 2009.

In recognition of his great contribution to hospitality education the Institute offers ‘The Derek Gladwell’ prize each year to the best ICM hospitality student.
